Background of the Study

Community leaders play an essential role in shaping political awareness and engagement at the grassroots level, especially in rural areas (Adamu & Lawal, 2023). In Zuru LGA, Kebbi State, community leaders, such as traditional rulers, religious leaders, and influential local figures, are instrumental in mobilizing citizens for political participation and increasing political awareness. These leaders serve as trusted voices within the community and their endorsement or disapproval of political issues can significantly impact voter turnout and civic engagement (Tukur & Bello, 2024). Through their leadership, community leaders facilitate the dissemination of political information, guide public opinion, and serve as intermediaries between citizens and government institutions (Hassan & Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines how these community leaders influence political awareness in Zuru LGA, focusing on their role in grassroots mobilization and the political behaviors of community members.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While community leaders are recognized as important figures in rural governance and political engagement, their specific influence on political awareness in Zuru LGA remains underexplored. The existing literature on grassroots mobilization primarily focuses on formal political institutions, often overlooking the role of informal community leaders who serve as conduits for political information (Bashir & Mohammed, 2023). This study aims to address this gap by investigating how community leaders in Zuru LGA shape the political awareness of their constituents and promote political participation at the local level.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of community leaders in enhancing political awareness in Zuru LGA.

  2. To examine how grassroots mobilization led by community leaders influences political participation in Zuru LGA.

  3. To evaluate the impact of community leaders' political endorsements and messages on the political behavior of Zuru LGA residents.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do community leaders in Zuru LGA contribute to increasing political awareness among local residents?

  2. What impact does grassroots mobilization by community leaders have on political participation in Zuru LGA?

  3. How do community leaders influence political behaviors such as voting and civic engagement in Zuru LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Community leaders in Zuru LGA significantly influence the political awareness of local residents.

  2. Grassroots mobilization by community leaders leads to increased political participation in Zuru LGA.

  3. Political endorsements by community leaders shape the political behavior of residents in Zuru LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the role of community leaders in enhancing political awareness and promoting civic engagement in rural areas. Understanding the dynamics of grassroots mobilization will be useful for policymakers, local government officials, and community organizations seeking to enhance democratic participation in Zuru LGA and similar regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This research is limited to Zuru LGA, Kebbi State, and focuses on the role of community leaders in political awareness and grassroots mobilization. It does not explore other factors influencing political participation, such as media or formal political campaigns.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Community Leaders: Local figures such as traditional rulers, religious leaders, or other influential individuals who guide and influence political activities at the grassroots level.

  • Political Awareness: The understanding and knowledge of political issues, processes, and events, as well as the ability to engage in political actions such as voting and advocacy.
